Sara Newberg King is the author of "Dye and Discharge: Playing on Fabric". It is a how-to book on the shibori process of dyeing and discharge. The book is now out of print but Sara is still available to teach this technique to you or your guild. The following are classes that she teaches and lectures that she gives.

SHIBORI This class can be a 1/2 day up to a 3 day class in which Sara will cover the basic methods of shibori. Students will learn to pole wrap, pleat, fold, scrunch, sew and gather, tie with string, manipulate with rubber bands, resist with clothes pins, and other fabric manipulation techniques to create a resist dyeing technique. The short classes cover discharging and the longer classes can include dyeing and painting.

SILK DYEING This class can be 1/2 day to 3 days. Non-toxic Jacquard silk dyes are used. Sara teaches a variety of techniques including resist with water- based resist, salt and/or water manipulation, shibori, thickening, stamping, spraying, and brush painting.

COTTON PAINTING This class can be 1/2 day up to 3 days and combined with the Shibori and/or silk dyeing class. Sara uses Dye-Na-Flow fabric paints that act as dyes to paint onto cotton and other fabrics. These paints use the same techniques as dyeing (above) plus Sara teaches the sun printing technique as well.

HAND QUILTING AND TRAPUNTO This is a 1/2 day class in which a student will learn how to perfect her hand quilting stitch using the rocking stitch. Then Sara will teach the trapunto stuffing method using a long needle and acrylic tie. When this is done with colored acrylic tie, the resulting design shows through on the front in muted tones.

SILK RIBBON EMBROIDERY This is either a 1/2 or whole day class and the project completed will depend on the time of the class. Students will learn basic embroidery stitches to create flowers with silk ribbon. Sara likes to dye silk ribbon so this class may be combined with a silk dyeing class. The class project for the 1/2 day class is a garden of 5 spring flowers. The project for the whole day class is a grouping of 9 squares that each picture a different group of flowers.

PIECED QUILTS Sara has been teaching quilting classes for 20 years and has taught a wide variety of techniques from Beginning Quilting, Strip Piecing, Stars, Machine Quilting, Machine Applique, Baltimore Album Quilts, Baby Quilts, Precision Piecing, etc. etc. Call her if there is a specific pattern you want taught.
